The real difference: labour
A man-and-van service is rubbish removal with the loading included — two people, a Luton van, in and out within the hour. That's worth real money for sofas down stairs, garages full of boxes, or landlord clearances on a deadline. A skip is the opposite trade: your labour, spread over one or two weeks, at a lower price for the same volume. There's no permit question with a van, and no skip sitting on the drive.

How do I know a waste clearance firm is legitimate?
Ask for their Environment Agency waste-carrier licence number and check it on the public register — you have a legal duty of care, and fly-tipped waste gets traced back to the householder. Every firm on this site with a “Licensed” badge appears on that register.
When does a skip beat man and van?
Any job that produces waste over days rather than in one pile: renovations, garden projects, clear-outs you do room by room. The skip sits there while you work. If everything is already bagged and ready to go in one lift, the van’s labour is worth paying for.
