What a skip permit is

A skip permit (some councils call it a skip licence) is the council's permission to stand a skip on the public highway — the road, a layby or the pavement. On private property — a driveway, garden or private car park — no permit is needed. In most areas only the skip hire company can apply, not the householder, so the fee arrives as a line on your hire price rather than a separate bill. An unpermitted roadside skip risks a fine of up to £1,000 plus removal costs.

That makes the council fee one of the few parts of a skip hire quote that is fixed, public and identical for everyone in the borough — and, as the table shows, wildly different one borough to the next.

Why a skip costs more to park in Wolverhampton

Standing a skip on the public road in Wolverhampton costs £60 per permit. In neighbouring Sandwell the same permission costs £48 — £12 less for what is, to the household paying it, an identical piece of paper. That is 25% more in Wolverhampton.
